Who is She?

She developed the first computer compiler as a research fellow at Harvard’s Computation Laboratory. She invented the COBOL programming language and invented the term “computer bug”.

She is also quoted as saying, "It is easier to ask for forgiveness than it is to get permission."

In 1969, the Data Processing Management Association awarded her the first Computer Science Man-of-the-Year Award. She became the first person from the United States and the first woman to be made a Distinguished Fellow of the British Computer Society in 1973. She also received multiple honorary doctorates from universities across the nation. The Navy christened a ship in her honor. In September 1991, she was awarded the National Medal of Technology, the nation's highest honor in engineering and technology. In 1973 she was the second woman elected to the National Academy of Engineering or NAE, one of the highest honors that can be given to an engineer. Her work was never patented; her contributions were made before computer software technology was even considered a "patentable" field.
